Glaucoma is a chronic blinding eye disease affecting over 80 million people worldwide, and the only modifiable risk factor for disease progression is intraocular pressure (IOP). For the past four years we’ve been developing a cellular-enabled home tonometer that will empower patients to monitor their IOP more effectively. As we prepare to bring our groundbreaking device to market, we are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer with an emphasis in embedded software development to join our team and contribute to this impactful mission.
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to develop and own the embedded software and maintain the existing hardware for our revolutionary IOP measurement device with support from the rest of the team. This role is central to our success in bringing our product to market and post-launch maintaining our fleet of devices across the country— offering a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology that will one day change patients’ lives. If you are passionate about low-level programming, have experience on embedded systems, and are eager to make a difference in the medical field, we would love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development, testing, and deployment of embedded software for our IoT enabled IOP measurement device.
- Design and implement robust, efficient, highly secure, and scalable embedded systems solutions that meet regulatory, quality, and performance requirements.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including mechanical, hardware, and software development, clinical affairs, and regulatory teams to ensure seamless integration and product functionality.
- Develop and optimize firmware for low-power, high-performance, battery-operated cellular devices.
- Establish and maintain a robust process for software and hardware integration, testing, verification, and validation to ensure high quality and reliability.
- Participate in the debugging, troubleshooting, and resolution of issues across hardware and software components.
- Lead post-launch maintenance and OTA updates for our fleet of devices in the market, ensuring consistent performance, security, and reliability.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, advancements, and regulatory requirements to ensure our solutions are competitive and compliant.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong proficiency in embedded C and software development for microcontrollers (e.g., ARM Cortex, STM32, etc.).
- Core concepts of embedded development, including:
- Embedded communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C)
- Basic signal processing
- Reading datasheets, electrical schematics, and using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and DMMs.
- Git and common git remote platforms like GitHub or Bitbucket.
- Solid understanding of hardware design principles, including schematics, PCB layout, and interfacing with various sensors and actuators.
- Experience with wireless communication protocols (e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, CAT-M) and low-power design considerations.
- Familiarity with basic Test and Measurement Instrumentation: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, supplies, etc.
- Must be able to perform protocol analysis.
- Must be able to perform battery profiling and characterization using analysis tools.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
- Self-motivated and adaptable, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with the STM32 family of microcontrollers.
- Experience with RTOS-based embedded development.
- Experience with developing IoT products.
- Familiarity with Nordic's family of low-power cellular devices for IoT.
- Experience with test-driven development for embedded systems.
- Knowledge or certifications in cybersecurity for embedded systems.
- Experience developing medical devices and working within associated regulatory compliance frameworks.
- Experience as an analog circuits/systems design engineer.
What We Offer:
- A competitive salary and stock options.
- A flexible working environment and a supportive team culture.
- Opportunities for growth and leadership within the company.
- The chance to be a part of a transformative journey that aims to make a huge impact on patient care in the ophthalmology industry and a significant exit for our employees and shareholders.
