Our innovative wildfire defense system allows homeowners to track wildfires, receive critical alerts, and actively safeguard their properties using a remotely operated fire protection system. With multiple layers of redundancy, our system hydrates homes and surrounding areas to prevent ignition from flying embers—the #1 cause of structure loss during wildfires.
We are a fast-growing team that has already achieved significant milestones in protecting homes across Northern and Southern California. Our team includes experienced engineers, product designers, and industry experts, and we are looking for a Senior Project Accountant to help drive our efforts.
About This Opportunity
As a Senior Project Accountant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial operations. This role requires expertise in GAAP-compliant percentage-of-completion (PoC) revenue recognition, WIP reporting, and job cost tracking in construction environments. You’ll collaborate closely with our Finance and Operations teams to oversee revenue recognition, job costing, and compliance while preparing the organization for future growth and systems implementation.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Accounting & Financial Operations
- Assist with monthly close process with focus on PoC revenue recognition under GAAP
- Prepare and analyze Work-in-Process (WIP) schedules to provide project-level financial visibility for operations and leadership
- Track underbillings and overbillings to ensure accurate revenue recognition and cash flow forecasting
- Collaborate with project managers to validate job cost allocations, budget-to-actual performance, and margin analysis
- Execute and manage month-end close processes, with a focus on Percentage of Completion (PoC) revenue recognition and job costing
- Manage deferred warranty expenses, inventory accounting, underbuild/overbuild revenue, and construction-specific cost tracking
Compliance & Controls
- Oversee payroll and sales tax compliance across multiple states
- Assist with internal controls and ensure audit readiness
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and documentation
Process Improvement & Systems Readiness
- Identify and support improvements in accounting systems, processes, and tools
- Prepare the organization for potential ERP adoption (e.g., NetSuite, Intacct), AP/AR automation, and other finance tech integrations
- Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of automation tools to streamline financial operations
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with the Finance and Operations teams on project and job costing
- Support reporting and FP&A initiatives, including financial analysis for leadership decision-making
- Work cross-functionally to ensure alignment on revenue, inventory, and cost recognition
- Collaborate with project managers and leadership to review WIP reports and provide insights into project performance
Qualifications
Must-Have:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 4+ years of accounting experience with strong technical expertise in GAAP
- Proven experience with construction accounting, including PoC revenue recognition, job costing, inventory, and deferred expenses, and WIP reporting
- Proficient in QuickBooks Online, Google Sheets, and Microsoft Excel
- Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, remote startup environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience working at a startup or high-growth environment
- CPA or CMA certification (or actively pursuing)
- Familiarity with software such as QuickBooks Payroll, Avalara, LiveFlow, Pulley
- Exposure to or experience evaluating ERP systems and tools such as NetSuite, Acumatica, Intacct
- Interest or experience in AP/AR automation (e.g., Ramp, Bill.com), FP&A tools (e.g., Pigment, Planful), and payroll platforms (e.g., Paylocity, Rippling)

- Competitive Salary Range: $ 80,000 to $110,000 DOE
